LANSING, Mich. — The debate continues in Lansing over whether to allow fish farms on the Great Lakes.
Some lawmakers want to ban the industry altogether. Tuesday, there was a press conference on the debate.
Two different bills are making their way through the state legislature. One bans fish farms completely while the other allows farms with proper regulations.
Lawmakers looking to ban the fish farms say a large number of fish in a concentrated area can create additional pollutants in the water and that fish feces create algae blooms. There is also concern that the fish would escape the floating farms and mix with wild fish, damaging the population in the Great Lakes and spread fish diseases.
On the other side, floating fish farms have been in operation in the Great Lakes for more than 40 years in Canada.
There is a hearing on the bill allowing for fish farms on Wednesday morning.
