SPRING LAKE, Mich. -- Fire officials say a lightning strike may be to blame for an apartment fire that happened in Spring Lake Township early Tuesday evening.

Initial Ottawa County dispatch reports were that lightning struck the Woodland Ridge apartment complex in the 18000 block of Woodland Ridge Drive a little after 6 p.m.

Fire officials at the scene say they believe the fire originated from the attic of the building, where there were no sprinklers to put it out. In all, one building with 12 units were impacted.

Dispatch and fire crews confirm that despite the flames, everyone was safely evacuated with no injuries reported. Firefighters also rescued a few cats.

A follow-up investigation will help determine an exact cause.
