WASHINGTON, D.C. – When President Obama released his 2017 Fiscal Year budget Tuesday, the Grand Rapids’ Laker Line Rapid Transit Project got a big boost.

The 13.3 mile Laker Line bus system is to provide service to Grand Valley State University from downtown Grand Rapids.  The project is one of 31 transportation projects in the budget to receive a total of $3.5 billion in federal funding through a grant program.  The Laker Line would get about $57 million.

The Laker Line is one of ten “Small Starts” projects not yet under construction.  Other projects include systems in Tempe, Sacramento, Ft. Lauderdale, Jacksonville, Indianapolis, Kansas City, Albuquerque, Everett and Seattle, Washington.

The funding comes from the Federal Transit Administration’s Capital Investment Grant Program.
