GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - After a seven week run to find a new Commissioner for Grand Rapids' 2nd Ward, Joe Jones was appointed by the Board of Commissioners Tuesday night.

"It was a very rigorous process," said Jones. "I look forward to doing all that I can to make the 2nd Ward the best it can possibly be. Its already got a great start, it's a great place to raise a family and it’s very diverse in terms of neighborhoods and people."

The 2nd ward seat has only been vacant a few months, it's the former seat of Mayor Rosalynn Bliss. Tuesday night, Jones was chosen to fill that vacancy at city hall's 7 p.m. commission meeting.

The race came down to Jones, Tamara Vandenberg, and Terrence McGee. City commissioners each gave a brief testimony to whom they believe should fill that spot, all were in favor of Jones.

"After a lot of careful, thoughtful consideration, I too have decided to support the appointment of Joe Jones for this seat," said Mayor Bliss. "Joe's strategic leadership is what our city needs to move forward in a positive direction. Joe is an advocate for all."
