LANSING, Mich. (AP) — Large-scale dog breeders in Michigan might have to pay an annual $500 registration fee after the House has passed a bill to regulate dog breeding in the state.

The House has approved the bill Wednesday. It would also grant a state department the authority to license and register large-scale dog breeders, in addition to the yearly fee.

The bill would also give $10,000 to the state department charged with regulating dog breeding to create the new regulatory framework for big dog breeding kennels, which the bill defines as more than 15 female dogs kept for breeding.

The Senate still has to approve the legislation before it can go to Governor Rick Snyder for his signature.
