SPARTA, Mich, -- One veteran in West Michigan got the ride of a lifetime on Friday morning.
Henry Williams was transported from the Grand Rapids Veterans home to Sparta Airport by bus. He was greeted by people from the 'Pilots for Christ' group who set up plane rides for veterans at no cost. The program is entirely volunteer based.
Henry and his caregiver along with two pilots loaded into the plane, then taking off… heading to Oxford, Mississippi. They plan to meet up with Henry's three sisters that live in the area.
Husband and wife and presidents of both the local and international 'Pilots for Christ' group, Lori and Timothy Layne say they're honored to be able to do this for veterans.
Timothy tells us that he "feels privileged to help the veterans and people that are in need of urgent transportation… and they plan to be there as long as the Lord has them there."
His wife, Lori says, "It's such a feeling of honor to do something for a veteran and give back to them. It is just so wonderful to serve veterans because they've served us."
The group in West Michigan is attempting to raise money to purchase a plane that meets all the proper standards, as well as accommodates people that need to lay down during long flights. If you'd like to donate you can do so here.
