Lack of snow means more money for potholes

WYOMING, Mich. - Warmer weather means more work coming on local roadways.

And since we've had a light winter and road commissions haven't spent their budget on clearing snow from roads, there is a surplus to help with the potholes that are popping up.

Many of the area road agencies are expecting to have left over money to put towards projects like filling potholes, spot paving and resurfacing, and expansion projects on major roads.  The surplus from the mild winter will also be used to even out budgets from past years when agencies had to dip into other funds to cover maintenance costs.

Road commissions are also saving on salt costs this year. Agencies contract with salt suppliers on three to five year contracts so with having a surplus this year, that will help with future year's purchases.  If next year happens to be a bad winter, the surplus will come in handy.
