GEORGETOWN TOWNSHIP, Mich. — An unfortunate update was passed along concerning a local firefighter’s ongoing battle with cancer late Thursday night.  The SikkemaStrong Facebook page announced that Kevin Sikkema has passed away.

Sikkema, a firefighter with Georgetown Township in Ottawa County, had been battling an aggressive form of brain cancer since being diagnosed in 2014.  On Thursday night, his wife posted the following update:

March 10, 2016
The strongest, bravest man I know ran into the arms of Jesus. Kevin Scott Sikkema, you are gone from my arms, but never from my heart. Your love, laughter and big smiles will forever live on through our children. Praise Jesus that your chains are gone and you’ve been set free.

The SikkemaStrong Facebook page is filled with condolences, prayers, and other comments from those who have been following the family’s struggles.

Ever since Sikkema’s original diagnosis, the community has rallied behind the entire family with fund-raising efforts and benefits.
