Ottawa County earns #1 spot in 2016 health ranking

OTTAWA COUNTY, Mich. — The University of Wisconsin Population Health Institute has released their 2016 health rankings by county.

Each year they rank every county in the United States, including the 83 that are in Michigan. The rankings are designed to measure overall health in each county.  They look at a variety of measures that affect the future health of local communities, like high school graduation rates, access to healthy foods, rates of smoking, obesity, teen births and more.

Ottawa County ranked #1 for Michigan. Other West Michigan counties of note include:

  • #11 – Ionia
  • #12 – Allegan
  • #16 – Kent
  • #39 – Kalamazoo
  • #64 – Newaygo
  • #71 – Calhoun
  • #72 – Muskegon
