Fall leaves hockey ref in critical condition

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — A hockey official fell prior to a game and was critically injured Friday night.

According to the Western Collegiate Hockey Association (WCHA), referee Oliver “Butch” Mousseaux sustained head injuries when he fell to the ice during warmups before Friday night’s second semifinal contest between Ferris State and Michigan Tech at the WCHA Final Five tournament at Van Andel Arena in Grand Rapids.

Medical personnel were on the scene at Van Andel Arena and immediately began treating Mousseaux. He was transported to Mercy Health St. Mary’s Hospital in Grand Rapids where he was listed in critical condition Saturday.

Ferris State, the No. 4 seed, upset top-seeded Michigan Tech 1-0 while Minnesota State beat Bowling Green 2-1 in the first semifinal. The WCHA Final Five is scheduled to wrap up with Saturday evening’s championship game between Ferris State and Minnesota State at 6:07 p.m. at Van Andel Arena.
