GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. -- Former Grand Rapids Police Officer Ryan Bruggink was found guilty Tuesday of sexually assaulting his ex-girlfriend.

Bruggink, 25, was found guilty of third-degree criminal sexual conduct and not guilty of home invasion and two counts of first degree criminal sexual conduct.

A Kent County jury returned their verdict after several hours of deliberations Tuesday afternoon. The charges were connected to a Nov. 2014 incident at his ex-girlfriend's Wyoming home.

Bruggink was charged with coming to the home unwanted, forcing his way in and sexually assaulting her. Bruggink maintained throughout the trial that the woman let him into her home, and that the two had consensual sex the night in question.

He is scheduled to be sentenced May 3.
