GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — When a pickup slammed into a pole at Burton Street and Madison Avenue, the crash was destined to affect the many drivers who use the Grand Rapids artery. The intersection is closed until further notice, because poles supporting traffic lights leaned so far the lights hung barely above the pavement.

One set of drivers found the closure a special challenge. Dispatchers for The Rapid could be heard scanners trying to figure out a detour on streets that could handle the long public transit buses.

There was no word Wednesday morning how long the intersection would be closed. The initial crash took place around 7:15 a.m.
