Crashes close WB I-196 at College Avenue in Grand Rapids

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. -- Westbound I-196 between College and Fuller Avenues was closed Monday evening after a series of crashes, one of which involved a fire truck.

A trooper with the Michigan State Police tells us as many as seven vehicles were involved in the series of crashes, including a Ford Ranger that crashed into a fire truck, pinning the driver inside. That driver was extricated and taken to the hospital.

State police say two people were hospitalizeds, both of whom are expected to survive.

Icy road conditions are considered factors in the crashes.

Fire officials say the fire engine that was hit was already on the highway attending to a prior crash when it was struck.

The highway reopened around 10:45 p.m.
