GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — A Calvin College softball coach has resigned amidst allegations of an alleged inappropriate relationship.

On Saturday, college officials confirm coach Tim  Syrek chose to resign after the allegations surfaced. Officials also said the allegations does not involve a student with the college.

Kevin Vande Streek, who serves as the basketball coach at Calvin, has been appointed as the interim softball coach.

Calvin College made no further comment regarding the allegations, but said they’re offering pastoral support to those who need it.

Here’s the statement released from Calvin College:

Allegations of a possible inappropriate relationship involving softball coach Tim Syrek were brought to Calvin’s attention, and we immediately began an investigation into these allegations. Prior to the conclusion of that investigation, Tim Syrek chose to resign from his position, and the college accepted his resignation. Calvin will, however, continue its investigation of these allegations until this process is complete. The alleged impropriety does not involve any students.

Student and employee well-being is a high priority for Calvin College, and our attention is focused on providing the pastoral care and support needed to make this transition. We ask that the media respect the privacy of our students during this time, and we note that we will make no further comments on this personnel matter.

Finally, in addition to his present responsibilities, Kevin Vande Streek, a faculty member in our kinesiology department and our longtime men’s basketball coach, has been appointed as interim softball coach and will take over a team that is 12-10 overall and 2-4 in the MIAA.
