GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. -A popular scholarship program in Grand Rapids has been expanded.

Organizational leaders gathered at Union High School in Grand Rapids on Wednesday to announce the expansion of the Challenge Scholars Program.  The Grand Rapids Community Foundation teamed up with Grand Rapids Public Schools and Grand Rapids Community College to announce the major expansion for students.

For the past three years, the Challenge Scholars Program has been offering free college tuition for students who come from disadvantaged families with limited amount of education. Originally, this was only for hand-picked students who attended Harrison Park, Westwood Middle School and Union High School.

The announcement on Wednesday unveiled that the program will now allow any student who attends Union High School the eligibility to receive two years free of tuition from Grand Rapids Community College as long as they have a GPA of 2.0 or higher.
