CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) — A prosecutor is seeking a change in the trial date for a white former North Charleston police officer charged with murder in the shooting death of a black motorist.

Solicitor Scarlett Wilson filed a motion on Wednesday asking the trial for Michael Slager be set for either this August or for May of next year.

He had been scheduled for trial on Oct. 31 in the death of Walter Scott.

But Wilson said she will not be able to try the case then because she needs time to prepare to prosecute the case of Dylann Roof, which is now set for trial next January.

Roof faces the death penalty and is charged with nine counts of murder in the slayings of nine parishioners at Emanuel AME Church in Charleston last June.
