WASHINGTON, D.C. — Former Tigers pitcher Max Scherzer made history Wednesday night as he became just the fourth pitcher to strike out 20 in a game, and he did it against his former team, the Tigers.

Scherzer tied the MLB record for strikeouts in a nine-inning game.  Roger Clemens twice, Kerry Wood and Randy Johnson are the others to do it.

Scherzer allowed 6 hits, 2 runs both earned and did not walk a batter while throwing 119 pitches in a complete game effort.

Washington won the game 3-2.
