  1. A local school has broken ground for an expansion aimed at welcoming more students.

The Potter's House in Wyoming says more than 200 kids are on a waiting list.

They'll go through some renovations to expand the high school, add new science labs, multipurpose rooms and more.

The project is about $9 million dollars, so far the school has raised $5.5 million

The superintendent says, they never expected the school to grow this big but are thrilled

Construction will begin this summer and they hope to finish the project sometime in November.

2. A proposal has been approved to help fund the Grand Rapids public museum and the John Ball Zoo.

It's a $.44 million tax increase, which will end up on the November ballot.

It would cost an extra $37 a year for the average homeowner in Kent County over a span of 10 years.

In a release from Friends of the Zoo and Museum, they say the money would help the zoo improve habitats for the animals and help with maintenance and repairs at both.

If the proposal is passed it will also allow free parking at the museum.

3. Trader Joe’s is pulling a kale product from its store shelves over salmonella concerns.

They issued a recall this week for its kale and edamame salad.

According to Trader Joe’s website the packaged salad was sold in 11 states, including Michigan.

Trader Joe’s said no illnesses have been reported in connection to the salad so far.

Customers with the recalled product should throw out the salad or return it to any Trader Joe’s for a full refund.

4. It's an easy way to help fight hunger this weekend.

Fox 17 and Feeding America West Michigan are teaming up for the cause.

If you'd like to take part in the Stamp Out Hunger program, just fill up a bag a of non-perishable food items and leave it out for your letter carrier on Saturday May 14.

Last year, the program ended up getting more than 62 thousand pounds of food.

5. May 13 is national cocktail day!

According to some liquor enthusiasts, today marks the end of world cocktail week.

This year, it also happens to fall on Friday the 13th, another good excuse to curl up with a stiff drink to ward off bad luck.
