BATTLE CREEK, Mich. — A 60-year-old man with disabilities was seriously injured after his motorized scooter was hit by a car that fled the scene early Saturday.

Police say they were sent to East Goodale and Hillsdale Street just before 12:15 Saturday morning.

Once police arrived on scene, they found the man unresponsive in the road. Officers say they recognized the victim, who is a resident of the area.

Police say the man was using his electric mobility scooter and was hit while either in the bike lane or right side of the street while traveling westbound. They say the vehicle that hit him was traveling in the same direction on Goodale Street and fled the scene.

Officers were only able to find a few parts that belonged to the mobility scooter at the scene of the accident. They believe the rest of the scooter may be embedded or stuck in the suspect’s vehicle.

The victim was taken to a hospital in serious condition. Police say the injuries may be life-threatening.

At 3:45 p.m. Saturday, the Battle Creek Police Department announced that they had located the suspect vehicle in the 100 block of East Goodale and were holding it “for further processing.”

Calhoun County Dispatchers tell FOX 17 a suspect has been taken into custody.
