SOUTH HAVEN, Mich. – The South Haven police department will soon be adding a new member to its ranks, and this recruit walks on four legs.

It’s been a year since the police department had a K-9 unit, and now they have “Chaos,” a 2-year-old Belgian Malinois born in the Netherlands and raised for police work.

"I couldn't ask for a better partner,” Says Kevin VanBrussel, a K-9 handler with the South Haven police department. “The loyalty and dedication is amazing, he's always got my back."

Chaos is energetic and loves to run, a good trait for a K-9 officer.

"Suspects who run from traffic stops, he's able to track them as well." Said VanBrussel.

For Chaos, the job is just a game. He gets little treats when he completes a task. His handler says the new recruit is scratching for the chance to help the community.

"I think he's going to be an excellent dog. It's going to take a little work, but he's coming along real good,” said VanBrussel.

The new dog is just two weeks into training, but in about a month, he’ll graduate and be certified as a K-9 officer.

He will help in tracking down suspects, sniffing for drugs and searching for missing people.
