MUSKEGON HEIGHTS, Mich. — City leaders in Muskegon Heights are hoping more residents will start taking advantage of their gun lock giveaway.

The city received 200 locks to start off the drive, which began on Monday.  But so far, the city has only given away 23. Leaders said they wanted the program to help people start a conversation about gun safety and how people think and talk about guns.

Police say several kids in the area have found guns, whether outside, inside or in people's yards.  If law-abiding registered gun owners took the time to lock up their guns, it could prevent others from getting a hold of it, including kids.

Muskegon Heights Police Chief Joseph Thomas told FOX 17 the city is also providing manuals with the gun lucks that explain how to properly lock, store and clean the weapons.
