Don’t cancel your weekend plans

The big question you’ve probably wanted to ask your local meteorologist over the last several days: “Will it rain for Memorial Day weekend?  I have plans!”

Even if you watched the forecast over the last several days, there has been a lot of uncertainty on the timing and coverage of storms.

Take Friday afternoon for example.  What is this?  Green, yellow, and orange circles??  All I really want to know is if it’s going to rain at my house!!

So here’s the deal: Yes, it WILL rain this weekend.  It will not be one of those all day rains, but there will certainly be times where the day gets dark clouds after being sunny for a majority of the day.

That’s the type of pattern we’re in.  It’s warm, muggy, and there’s a frontal system nearby that won’t move.  These are all a recipe for pop-up showers and thunderstorms to be in the back of our minds at all times this weekend.

I’ve highlighted specific time frames on the graphics above, because most of these rains will occur in the afternoon.  Notice they don’t cover the entire state.  We’ll likely see them move through very quickly and exit as quickly as they came.

Here are the takeaways that will get you by this weekend:

  • There are going to be scattered storms, most of which will occur in the afternoon and evening.
  • They will not last long, and they may miss some areas altogether.  That means your outdoor plans could be completely dry!
  • Just in case one of these pop-up storms heads toward your area, have a plan B!  Be ready to head inside for a few minutes, use your umbrella, or pack rain gear.

Temperature-wise, it will feel a lot more like the unofficial first week of summer.  Let’s all enjoy the holiday safely and remember those who are currently serving and have served our great nation.
