HOLLAND TOWNSHIP, Mich. (AP) — Officials say a man has died after he was pulled from a pond in Ottawa County where he was trapped in a submerged car for about 40 minutes.

Firefighters and the Ottawa County sheriff’s department dive team were called to the scene around 4:10 p.m. Tuesday after witnesses saw a vehicle drive into the pond at Lakeshore Medical Campus in Holland Township. The Grand Rapids Press reports witnesses told investigators that the car went under within two minutes.

Crews had to retrieve the car before they could free its sole occupant.

The sheriff’s department says the driver, 51-year-old Jeffrey Adkins of Holland, was unconscious when he was removed from the car. He was taken to Holland Hospital, where hospital spokesman Tim Breed tells The Holland Sentinel he died early Wednesday.
