GRANT TOWNSHIP, Mich. — A Pennsylvania man faces several charges after reportedly assaulting his girlfriend, leaving the scene of an accident  and resisting arrest along the highway in Oceana and Muskegon Counties over the weekend.

It happened along northbound US- 31 near the Muskegon and Oceana County line in Grant Township.

Michigan State Police said witnesses reported the man was assaulting his girlfriend and grabbed the steering wheel to in an attempt to allegedly crash the vehicle. Police said the man jumped from the moving vehicle and was struck by another vehicle that was traveling in the northbound lanes of US 31. The impact caused visible damage to the vehicle, but police said the 26-year-old suspect was still able to run away from the scene.

Authorities soon caught up with the suspect in Grant Township, but police said the suspect resisted arrest by several officers and pepper spray was used to subdue him.

The man was taken to the hospital for treatment of injuries police said he sustained from the accident. On the way to the hospital, police reported the man tried to kick out the windows of the squad car. The man was allegedly confrontational with hospital staff and resisted “the service of a search warrant for his blood issued by the 78th District Court.”

Authorities said the man was taken to the Oceana County jail. The man faces several charges including five counts of resisting and arresting — a two year felony. He also will likely be charged with two counts of assault and battery, which is a 93 day misdemeanor. Authorities said additional charges may follow for domestic assault and leaving the scene of an accident.

The man’s identity was not released pending a court arraignment in Oceana County and a review of possible charges in Muskegon County, according to police.
