GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — The reconstruction of the interchange at I-96 and Cascade Road in Grand Rapids Township has progressed to where another ramp will close permanently. The loop ramp from westbound I-96 to westbound Cascade Road Exit 40A will close at 8 p.m.

A detour for access to Cascade Road from westbound I-96 will be in effect until the redesigned interchange is completed: Continue west on I-96, exit at the East Beltline and go south to Cascade Road. A much longer alternative would have you exit at 28th Street, go west to the East Beltline and north to Cascade Road.

The first of two new bridges carrying Cascade Road over I-96 is nearly complete. The existing bridge will be demolished this weekend, which will require closures of I-96 each night this weekend.

While the interchange previously had four exit ramps, the new diverging diamond interchange will have only two exit ramps.

This video from the Michigan Department of Transportation shows how the new interchange will work.
