Drunk driving enforcement to be stepped up again this year

LANSING, Mich. — The statewide “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over Campaign” will ramp up again this summer with Michigan State Police leading the way in stepping up enforcement of drunk driving laws. County sheriff’s offices and local police departments will also take part in the program, which last year resulted in 292 driver arrests over the July 4th weekend alone.

The legal blood alcohol limit in the state is .08, which added penalties if a first-time arrest is for BAC of .17 or higher.

In 2015, the most recent year for which numbers are available, the number of traffic deaths involving alcohol jumped 19 percent over 2014.

‘The Michigan Office of Highway Safety urged the use of designated drivers.
