College students set record of 3,700 MPG at Michigan auto competition

MARSHALL, Mich.– Teams from all around the world came to Eaton’s Proving Grounds in Marshall  to participate in the annual Society of Automotive Engineers Supermileage Competition, and the results were released on Tuesday.

The Supermileage competition has been going for 37 years and is held for the purpose of raising public awareness of high-mileage and fuel efficient vehicles in addition to encouraging students to pursue career paths in science, technology , engineering and math.

For the third year in a row, the Universite Laval from Quebec City in Quebec, Canada placed first, and this time, setting an all-time record by achieving 3,788 miles per gallon with their student designed and built vehicle.

21 teams came to Eaton’s Marshall Proving grounds ranging from countries like the United States, Canada, India and Lebanon.

Michigan-based University of Detroit Mercy and Lawrence Technological University were both in attendance and showed some impressive improvement in their second year.
