IONIA TOWNSHIP, Mich. -- The descendants of a Civil War veteran say they are very unhappy with Ionia Township officials' decision to tear down his final resting place.
Rena Broon saw FOX 17's first report about the controversy surrounding the mausoleum of Albert Clark and his son in June. Broon said her family believes Clark is her great great great grandfather. She said the township's decision to destroy the mausoleum was very disrespectful, and her family won't be letting this go easily.
"[Township officials] should have never had that done without permits, or permission from everybody," Broon said.
Ionia Township Supervisor Larry Listerman said the burial site was an eye sore and a safety hazard. He said there were not bodies buried inside.
The county has no record of bodies being moved from the site.
The former caretaker of the cemetery said its removal was a disgrace.
