COVERT TOWNSHIP, Mich. — A Covert Township police officer has resigned amid a sexual assault investigation by the Michigan State Police, authorities say.

Covert Township Police Chief Jay Allen says the allegations stem from a July 9 incident.   Allen says he contacted state police to investigate the incident after a citizen reported it.

He said the officer resigned shortly after the investigation started.

State Police say they have finished their investigation and forwarded it to the Van Buren County Prosecutor’s Office to determine if charges will be filed.

The officer was not identified.  No other information about the incident was released.
