Grand Rapids teacher killed in northern Michigan crash

PETOSKEY, Mich. – A Grand Rapids woman who was a teacher for the Kent Intermediate School District has died after a crash in northern Michigan over the weekend.

The Petoskey News reports Lorri Dawes, 38, was in a car with her family on M-119 near the Spring Lake Park just north of U.S. 31. Saturday night about 9:30pm, when a van crossed the center line and hit them head-on.  She died at Munson Medical Center in Traverse City Monday night.

Kent County ISD tells FOX 17 that Dawes was a teacher at the Godfrey-Lee Early Childhood Center, teaching four year old children.

The driver of the van, Nick Murrell, 26, of Alanson, and the members of the Dawes family, Jeffrey, 53, Joshua, 12, and Lindsey, 14, were all also taken to the hospital with injuries.
