DETROIT (AP) — A Detroit man who has lived at the same house for more than 50 years says mail isn’t being delivered because his porch doesn’t have a rail.

Rick Maruszczak tells WJBK-TV that he’s been forced to pick up his mail at a post office for the last three months. He says he’s been told that he needs a rail because there are four steps leading to the porch.

In a statement, the U.S. Postal Service says safety is a priority and it will stop delivery if there’s a “possible hazard.”

Maruszczak says a rail would cost $300 to $400 to install. He laments that the Postal Service promises to deliver mail through rain or snow but not if there’s four steps and no rail.

My USPS stopped delivery for a week because the side walk was not shoveled right up to the mail box. They also refused to pick up my outgoing mail for two weeks because “they had nothing to drop off”. I live inside of town!

I rather take five min. to shovel a sidewalk or install a handrail than to face a lawsuit because of pride. If structures or sidewalks on your property are not maintained and someone gets hurt for using them you are liable for injury or damages. just because no one complained about a handrail in the past 50 years does not make the postals services argument weak or not relative. someone walking up an icey step or porch with no hand rail to help is no different than going down stairs on roller blades. can’t force people to work in an unsafe environment. And delivery of the mail is not bound to a residence it’s delivery to the the area post office residential service is a courtesy created by the postmaster during WW2 because of the overwhelming amount of death notices coming into the offices. This article and most of the arguments are weak. Once again this kind of story is used to make a service like the USPS look like a bunch of assholes but this is nothing more than bad journalism.
