SOUTH HAVEN, Mich. -- A wedding ring that was lost in Lake Michigan has been found thanks to a West Michigan man with a metal detector.

Jamie Kennedy says she lost the ring during a recent trip to the beach with her kids and friends.

"I was in the water when I pushed my ring up to get some sand out from under in it when it fell into the water," Kennedy said.

After looking in the lake for an hour she called it quits, and thought had lost it forever.  In a last ditch effort, she posted a message on Facebook asking for help.

The status was shared thousands of times, eventually reaching the president of West Michigan Metal Detectors Club John Dudley.

"As soon as I read her Facebook posting, I messaged Jamie and said 'Hey, I would like to help, I have a metal detector," Dudley said.

The two met at the beach in South Haven and started searching.   Then, the detector went off.

"It was a great moment.  I was walking along and just kin dof listening for the detector to beep, and when it beeped I was like 'Oh okay, there's something there," Dudley said.

He scooped up a pile of the sand and discovered the ring.   He  motioned a thumbs up to Jamie and ran right over.

"Oh she just loved it and she was just crying immediately and gave me a big hug and said 'Thank you, thank you,'" Dudley said.

Kennedy says the search along the lakeshore makes her believe in miracles.

"I think people just need to not lose hope," she said.  "I feel like I had and forgotten that it could happen.  When it did happen, it reminded me miracles do happen and there are still good people in the world."
