Van Buren Co. police chase ends in fiery crash

LAWRENCE, Mich. — Deputies in Van Buren County say three people are in custody after a police chase ended in a fiery crash Monday night.

The crash happened in the 51000 block of 44th Avenue in Lawrence.

Deputies say the suspected driver, identified as Walker Oliver Woods, 22, from Kalamazoo, refused to stop for police while driving an unregistered vehicle.  The chase itself lasted about 15 minutes prior to the crash and the car catching fire.

Police say Woods tried to run from the scene through a swampy area with water approximately four feet deep. K-9 units were called to assist, and Woods was located and arrested on a variety of charges.

Deputies say there were two passengers in the car during the chase, and at one point were throwing projectiles at pursuing officers. One patrol car was damaged as a result.

Ryan Glen Grady, 30, from Dowagiac was arrested on multiple charges. A 24-year-old woman from Decatur was also arrested. She is not being identified until she is arraigned.

Deputies say there were no serious injuries in this incident despite the crash and the car catching fire. Below are the full charges against all suspects involved.

  7. Warrant for Contempt of Court out of Cass County FOC Court, Bond $1315.00
  8. Warrant for Contempt of Court out of Cass County FOC Court, Bond $655.00

The 24 year old female passenger:

All three were lodged at the Van Buren County Jail.
