PORT SHELDON TOWNSHIP, Mich. — Police say a 60-year-old man body surfing off the North Pier of Pigeon Lake in Lake Michigan drowned on Sunday.

The 911 call was made around 1:30 p.m. Sunday afternoon.

Two brothers were reportedly body surfing when one of them began to struggle near the sand bar, according to the Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office.

Police said high waves and a strong rip current made it difficult for the man to help his brother back to shore. The man’s body was soon discovered and removed from the water by deputies.

The man was pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics with North Ottawa Community Hospital EMS.
