GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. -- A view from the sky shows just how widespread the tornado damage is in the Grand Rapids area.
Tony Gwinn of Skydive Holland took FOX 17 up in his plane to survey the damage from Saturday's wild weather.
FOX 17 flew the same path the storms took. Some neighborhoods looked unharmed, but others only a block or two away were hit hard, with downed trees everywhere.
One spot hit especially hard is the Ironwood Golf Course and the surrounding area.
On the golf course, most trees were tilted the same way, an indication of straight-line wind damage. On other parts of the course, trees were lying in opposite directions, an indication of a tornado.
A nearby cornfield showed a distinct singular line of damage and swirl pattern.
"I've never seen anything like that before," pilot Tony Gwinn said.
Ultimately it comes down to the National Weather Service to determine what kind of damage this area saw, whether it was straight-line winds or a tornado.
