GREENVILLE, Mich. -- Despite all of the damage and clean-up following Saturday's severe weather, it wasn't enough to stop a West Michigan couple from getting married.
Lydia and Ryan Koster said "I do" in Greenville on Saturday, but were forced to delay their ceremony because of the severe weather ripping through Montcalm County that afternoon.
With rain on your wedding day said to be a good luck charm, this couple should have a lifetime of happiness with a tornado. Guests were forced to hunker down in a basement for a few hours, but that didn't stop them from spending the reception dancing in the rain.
Months and months of wedding planning were halted at a moment's notice.
"It started to rain and I just thought hopefully it clears up eventually," said Ryan Koster. "It kind of just got worse and worse and worse."
Ryan and Lydia decided to delay their ceremony an hour to let the storm pass.
"A lot of our friends joked that we're so cool that Mother Nature wanted to show up" said Lydia Koster. "It was pretty fun."
"Yeah they said our love created tornadoes," joked Ryan Koster.
Before the pair would say their 'I do's', guests would make an unscheduled trip to the basement.
"I kept telling everyone I'm not allowed in the house because I can't see Lydia getting ready or in her dress beforehand, so I just told the other family members I will stand here in the yard during the storm and they could go inside," said Ryan Koster.
The sun would come out eventually and long enough for them to exchange their vows.
"We saw a double rainbow during the reception," said Lydia Koster.
Now two days after the wedding, the newlyweds can't help but see it as good luck.
"Some has said it's good luck if it rains on your wedding day because it's a sign of fertility," said Ryan Koster. "I got a kick out of that, because we're waiting a little bit for that."
This would also be their first test as a married couple.
"We're able to get through the small things," said Lydia Koster. "Don't sweat the small stuff, you know? Just move onward and keep going."
"We had a lot of trials getting hitched, and I think that proves itself that we got through it and it turned out beautiful," said Ryan Koster.
The couple said not all of their guests were able to make it to the wedding because their roads were blocked by fallen trees from the storms.
The Kosters say they're just lucky they were able to have their wedding on Saturday and are currently enjoying their honeymoon together.
