ROCKFORD, Mich. — The Rockford varsity football team will forfeit its season-opening game against Saline scheduled for Friday due to an outbreak of illness among its players.

According to an email sent to parents late this afternoon from Rockford Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Michael Shibler, head coach Ralph Munger’s “position (is) that the game not be played due to the large percentage of athletes affected by the illness.”

Shibler adds that “there are no indications that there is a problem with the municipal water or an environmental cause at the high school, but we continue to work with [Kent County Health Department] officials to rule out air- or water-borne causes.”

Assistant Superintendent of Finance Mike Cuneo told FOX 17 Wednesday that the district was made aware of a group of players from the varsity football team becoming sick with symptoms similar to a stomach bug.
