ALGOMA TOWNSHIP, Mich. — A Sparta man was killed when his out-of-control car spun into a tree early Sunday morning.

At 6:29 a.m. Sunday, the Kent County Sheriff’s Department, Algoma Township Fire and Rockford Ambulance were dispatched to a personal injury accident on Pine Island Drive north of 10 Mile Road in Algoma Township.

Investigators determined that Alex Monarrez, 24, of Sparta was driving a 2003 Nissan Altima northbound on Pine Island when the vehicle went off the shoulder on the east side of the roadway.

The car then re-entered the roadway while spinning out of control. It spun off the west side of the roadway and struck a tree with the passenger side.

Monarrez was pronounced dead at the scene.

He was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the collision.

The incident remains under investigation by the Kent County Sheriff’s Department.
