GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. -- If you've ever wanted to explore the depths of Lake Michigan without touching the water, you could soon be able to do that with an underwater drone.
A group of Hope College grads have come up with a submersible that you can control with your cell phone. Their company, Fathom, had a campaign launch Tuesday at the Grand Rapids Public Museum.
"The ability to enable people to explore and do things that they couldn't otherwise do is the most exciting thing to me," said Danny Vessells, a co-founder of Fathom.
It's been a wild ride for the founders of Fathom. The three guys started the project two years ago while still in school at Hope College.
After graduation, they decided to take a shot at turning their school project into a real business.
They say the ways the underwater drone can be used are limitless, from police searches to industrial inspections. They say it could also be a treasure hunter's best friend.
The group needs to raise $150,000 to put the drones into production. They have aKickstarter to help raise funds.
