Get your car ready for colder weather

Fall is just around the corner, and you want to make sure you vehicle is ready for the change in weather and the change in your back-to-school schedule.

The owner's manual is the best place to start when you're looking to check on the car basics, because every car has certain needs.

Make sure your battery is working properly. Extreme summer temperatures can drain it, so this is a great time of year to have it checked. If it's not working right,  Interstate Batteries deliver long-lasting, maximum performance in the toughest conditions.

Also make sure your tires are properly aligned, inflated, and rotated. As the temperature drops and road conditions change, you want the tires to be able to handle the elements.

Check all of the fluids in your car to make sure they're filled. Keep your washer fluid filled and replace your wipers if they're run down so you'll be able to see in harsh elements like rain and snow.

Check your coolant level when the engine is cool. Don't check it when the engine is still hot because the fluid level changes when the motor is hot. You'll also want to have the transmission, brake, and power steering fluids checked and filled.

Getting an oil change is also a good idea to keep the engine in top condition. The "every 3,000 miles or six months" rule doesn't apply to newer vehicles, so check your owner's manual for when you need to change the oil.

Finally, especially with colder weather coming  our way, make sure you pack and update an emergency road kit for the car. The kit should contain:

  • Flashlight with extra batteries
  • Jumper cables
  • Drinking water
  • First-aid kit
  • Non-perishable snacks
  • Blankets
  • Ice scraper
  • Shovel

Before winter arrives, remember to add gloves, hats, and other clothing items to keep warm in case of an emergency.
