Look for the northern lights overnight

WEST MICHIGAN — It doesn’t happen too often, but sometimes we get lucky enough to see a beautiful display of what is commonly known as the Aurora Borealis or northern lights. With plenty of sun spot and geomagnetic activity the past few days, it sends energy hurling toward the earth that can result in gorgeous colors across our sky.

My biggest concern is that a pesky upper level low pressure system will continue to generate clouds and perhaps even a few showers overnight. The best chance of that will occur from Grand Rapids off to the south, but further north we may very well see the skies open up (even if briefly) to catch a glimpse at these fabulous lights.

You can get the actual northern lights forecast by clicking here. The map below shows where the lights may be visible…all the as far south as Michigan in the areas shaded in green.

Again…we’ll need to break up some of the clouds to catch the light show. The best chance of that is further north of Grand Rapids. Get the complete forecast at www.fox17online.com/weather.
