Newaygo’s John Goodin set to coach against former school Friday

NEWAYGO -- Friday night Tri County will host Newaygo at Goodin-Parker Field.

One of the men for which that stadium is named will be on the visiting sideline.

Lions assistant coach John Goodin is in his 50th season of coaching high school football, 27 of those years were spent as the head coach for the Vikings were he won 153 games which included a 30-game winning streak that spanned from 1977 to 1981.

"I'm very humbled, very thankful and I've been blessed to have that honor" Goodin said.  "Coach Overbeek and the players from Tri County over the years basically 30 years there and I just had tremendous backing by the families and the players and even to this day they understand, the other night at our seventh and eight grade games some of the parents came and talked because their sons had played for me back in the day."

Goodin began his coaching career in 1967 as an assistant at Newaygo and also spent one year at Ravenna before taking over the program at Tri County in 1973.
