LEROY TOWNSHIP, Mich. — Police have recovered the body of an elderly man who they say drowned in a Calhoun County lake on Monday afternoon.

Michigan State Police were called to Sonoma Lake in Leroy Township shortly before 4:00 p.m. after witnesses reported seeing debris floating in the water. They told Troopers that a boat they had seen approximately 15 minutes prior in that location had seemingly disappeared.

Additional departments were called to assist at the scene, including the Calhoun County Marine unit.  They located the boat, which had fully submerged under water. Upon discovering the missing boat, officials then called the Calhoun County Area Law Enforcement Underwater Recovery Team (ALURT).

Members of ALURT then located the body of an elderly drowning victim, identified as Theron Stults, 89.

It is unclear what caused the victim’s boat to sink.
