ALPINE TOWNSHIP, Mich. — Deputies in Kent County arrested a man after they say he assaulted an officer and tried resisting arrest.

Police say they were called to the parking lot of the Walmart located at 3999 Alpine Avenue for reports of a suspicious vehicle.

Upon arrival, officers found three people in the car who they say were using a controlled substance.

When deputies tried to remove the passenger from the front seat, police say he elbowed the officer in the side of his face and continued to resist.

Police say that’s when they found a stolen semi-automatic handgun in the suspect’s waistband.

The suspect was taken to the ground and arrested without further incident.

Police say the two other passengers ran from the scene during the struggle and were never found.

The case remains under investigation.
