GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. -- A rise in violence over the past two months, prompted Grand Rapids Police to implement a larger police presence on Friday and Saturday nights.

Operation Safe Streets not only put more officers on the streets in uniform, but some also drove unmarked cars and wore plain clothing throughout the two day operation. Police say an increased presence could be seen between Wealthy Street to Burton Street and Division Avenue to Fuller Avenue.

On Monday, the Grand Rapids Police Department released their results:

83 Citizen Contacts
86 Traffic Stops
3 Stolen Vehicle Recoveries
32 Misdemeanor Arrests
9 Felony Arrests

The arrest charges include, but are not limited to:

Driving Related Offenses
Outstanding Warrants
Auto Theft Offenses
Drug and Alcohol Offenses
Possession of Illegal Weapons

Chief David Rahinsky also released a statement:

“I have no doubt that the increased staffing significantly impacted the decrease in gun related violence over the weekend. Public Safety is our top priority, and we will continue to be proactive in addressing crime in our community. ”
