WASHINGTON (AP) — Newly-released government numbers show that graduates of career training programs at public colleges tend to land better paying jobs than those who attended for-profit schools.

Average earnings for those with certificates from public schools were nearly $9,000 higher than those with for-profit certificate programs.

About 1.3 million students are enrolled in career college programs ranging from nursing and welding to cosmetology and other fields.

The report looked at programs covered by the department’s “gainful employment” regulations, which require career training programs to show that students can earn enough money after graduation to pay off their student loans.

Under Secretary of Education Ted Mitchell says that data will give students the information they need to make informed decisions rather than ones “based on too-good-to-be-true promises.”
