EAST LANSING, Mich. (AP) — Records for 449 current and former Michigan State University students and employees have been accessed during a breach of a school server.

The school says an unauthorized party gained access to the records Sunday and that the server was taken offline within 24 hours of the breach.

The database contained about 400,000 records that included names, social security numbers and university identification numbers. It did not contain passwords, or financial, academic or health information.

Records exposed are to faculty, staff and students employed by the school between 1970 and last Sunday, or students since 1991.

Campus police are working with federal authorities in the investigation.

Michigan State is offering free credit monitoring to individuals who may be affected by the breach.
