GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. -- A ministry in Grand Rapids held a free community dinner in anticipation of Thanksgiving.

Urban Family Ministries on Eastern Avenue passed out meals and desserts Monday afternoon. They say it's to help the community heal after a rash of shootings this fall, including one just outside their door in October.

"I come from the streets, and I did what I saw growing up. I figure if people see different, they'll do different," said Elijah Libbett with Urban Family Ministries. "To be a positive image in the community, ya know, that's worth giving back."

The shooting happened at a memorial for Juwan Boykins, who died from a shooting in another part of town. His grandmother suffered critical injuries that night.

Officials say they believe they fed around 900 people, and are planning on holding another dinner closer to Christmas.
