KALAMAZOO COUNTY, Mich. -- A Wayne State University police officer with West Michgian ties has died after being shot in the head while on patrol near the school's campus in Detroit.

Wayne State university says Officer Collin Rose died Wednesday evening around 5:45 p.m. He was 29.

Rose graduated from Gull Lake High School in 2006 and from Ferris State University in 2010. He was planning on getting married next October.

Rose was shot Tuesday night in Detroit's Woodbridge Estates neighborhood after radioing in that he was about to speak to someone about possible thefts from vehicles in the area.

Rose once worked with the Richland Village Police Department. Chief Jeff Mattioli said Rose began his career in law enforcement as a teenager but started as an intern interested in computers. The longer he worked there thought, the more he wanted to get into law enforcement.

“Quickly we learned that he’s a lot smarter than a lot of us here. I mean he was computer guy…Well the longer he hung around and did his intern, he wanted to be a police officer,” Mattioli said.  “I tried to steer him away form that but. There was no go. He was wired to do it.”

Rose was working on getting his masters degree in police administration at Wayne State. He was only one credit shy of earning it when he died.

A suspect was arrested Tuesday night, but has not been charged.

University President M. Roy Wilson said Rose is the only Wayne State officer to "fall in the line of duty."
