BATTLE CREEK, Mich. — The funeral service for a World War II pilot from New York happened Saturday.

In 1945, Army Forces 1st Lt. Frederick Langhorst was 24 years old when his cargo plane crashed on a trip to China from India.

Four people were aboard, but the crash site wasn’t immediately identified.

More than 60 years later, in 2007, an independent investigator discovered aircraft wreckage in a deep ravine in India.

Bone fragments were recovered and analyzed, the first of many steps to confirm the remains belonged to Langhorst, who was from Yonkers, New York.

A previous version of this story said Langhorst will be buried today but we are now told Langhorst will be cremated.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.
